A Look At Artist John Donaldson

Here at Mayne Gallery, we are proud to be one of the best art galleries in Devon, and this is thanks to our wonderful collections from acclaimed artists like John Donaldson.

Famous for his beautiful watercolour paintings, Donaldson, born in 1945, began to fulfil his passion for painting in his teens. With a grandfather who was also a talented painter, he was inspired and encouraged to exhibit and even sell his work at a young age.

He studied composition and classic organ for six years, with music being his other great love, before he met his wife Sandi. It was finally in 1975 when he realised his true vocation as an artist and moved back to the beautiful countryside of South Devon.

He uses much of the surrounding area as a backdrop to his work, as well as France and the Italian Riviera.

Donaldson first launched a collection at the Mayne Gallery ten years after he began his painting career in 1985, and 30 years later he still has pieces of his work hanging in the local exhibition area.

The artist describes himself as an “impressionist” artist, using natural elements such as light to portray the beauty and honesty of the landscapes he paints.

He tirelessly works in his studio at his Devon home every day, sometimes painting six hours per day.

Visitors particularly love Donaldson’s work as his watercolour paintings accurately reflect some of the county’s most beautiful scenes, and remind them of their time spent in South Devon.
